The basin in the heart of the Idrija hills

Idrija is proud of its Alpine Town of the Year of 2011 and European Destination of Excellence (EDEN) of 2011 titles. It is well-known for its mercury mine, the size of which is second only to Spanish Almadén. Since June 2012, the rich heritage of both mines is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Idrija and its surroundings offer various possibilities of relaxation from sport to recreation. Especially popular during the summer is the Upper Idrijca Valley with its highlight, natural swimming pool Lajšt at Idrijska Bela, which is a great place to swim and cool down. The Slovenian Mountain Hiking Trail, Slovenian Geological Route and the international Via Alpina all cross this area, while hunting and fishing enthusiasts as well as mushroom- and herb pickers will also definitely feel at home here.
